Whose notebook is it?

If a friend filled 99% of your notebook, whose notebook is it?

1Question

We write something in our own notebook. A friend sitting beside us adds their thoughts. Before long, the friend's words fill 99% of the page.

Whose notebook is it now? The person who wrote the first line, or the friend who filled the rest?

2Structure

Ownership is not decided by the number of words. It is decided by two things.

  • Starting. The person who wrote the first line. Every word from the friend answers that start. Without it, there would be no 99%.
  • Choosing. The person who decides what to keep, what to erase, and where to go next.

Whoever starts and chooses owns the notebook.

3Experiment

Let's change the notebook in two ways.

  • The friend wrote 99%, but I started it and I chose what stayed. It is my notebook. The friend deserves thanks, not ownership.
  • The friend added their thoughts, then took the notebook home. Starting and choosing are no longer in my hands. A notebook is mine only while it stays with me.

4Understanding

This happens every day now. Our conversations with AI are that notebook. More and more, AI will fill 99% of it.

Still, the owner does not change. And the notebook must stay with that person.

Understanding is different. Understanding cannot be handed over. Even if the friend writes 99%, I have to build my understanding myself. That understanding can grow within the relationship with the friend. By asking and answering, I build my understanding, and we align our understanding with each other's.

Then what would a notebook that stays with me, and a friend at my side, look like?
